‘Irredeemably Corrupt People Around’ Raila Odinga?

At least one of them has a serious question to answer: either Sarah Elderkin, ‘journalist’ and sometime communications advisor to Raila Odinga, alleged that there were people ‘around’ the Prime Minister who were ‘irredeemably corrupt’, or Miguna Miguna, former aide to the Odinga and recently turned author of ‘Peeling back the mask’, made it up. If it is the former Ms Elderkin should be questioned by the proper authorities regarding what she knows about corruption in or around the PM’s office; if it is the latter Mr Miguna should face proceedings for libel.

THE ‘LETTER’ TO RAILA ODINGA

In ‘Peeling back the mask’ Miguna Miguna reproduced what purported to be a full transcript of a letter (pages 496-498) written by Sarah Elderkin to Raila Odinga on August 6, 2011, in the wake of Miguna’s sacking. Miguna claimed that ‘The support Sarah gave me at the time was invaluable’, and that, ‘Among my close friends, she had been the first to react in a manner that demonstrated genuine concern’.

In the ‘letter’ Sarah Elderkin complains to Raila Odinga at the nature of Miguna’s sacking.

‘I personally think what happened is appalling’, the text reads, and continues; ‘When I heard of it, my first thought was Moi, and the trepidations with which people awaited the one o’clock news and roadside declarations about their sacking. It is a terrible that an action of your office should reduce me, of all people, to that kind of comparison’.

‘You have people around you playing major roles who are irredeemably corrupt’

According to Miguna’s book, Elderkin then went on; ‘Apart from being completely ill-advised that you rid yourself of one of the best brains you have around you (and you have got some nincompoops, that’s for sure) this has been done [Miguna’s sacking] in the most disgusting fashion.’

The scene has been set, now we get to the core of the matter that was either written by Sarah Elderkin, or fabricated by Miguna Miguna.

‘IRREDEEMABLY CORRUPT… BLATANT CORRUPTION’

The ‘letter’ goes on: ‘You [Prime Minister Odinga] have people around you playing major roles who are irredeemably corrupt. Two of them were suspended earlier and then incomprehensibly reinstated. They were suspended on full pay and benefits. Now you have a man who is totally loyal and not involved in your staff’s blatant, well-known all over town, corruption, yet he is ‘suspended’ without pay…’

‘…your staff’s blatant, well-known all over town, corruption’

IF the letter supposedly written by Sarah Elderkin to Prime Minister Raila Odinga as reproduced in Miguna’s book ‘Peeling back the mask’ is a genuine and fully accurate transcription of the correspondence the Ms Elderkin must surely take what she knows of ‘blatant’ ‘corruption’ linked to staff at the Prime Minister’s office to the police.

WAS THE ‘LETTER’ GENUINE?

Was the alleged Elderkin letter to Odinga genuine?

On the Tuesday after the launch of ‘Peeling back the mask’, Sarah Elderkin was given three-and-a-half pages in The Daily Nation by way of a ‘Right to Reply’ to respond to Miguna’s ‘controversial book’.

‘Miguna broke an undertaking of confidence and made a private communication public’

The opening paragraph of her article began: ‘I have defended Miguna Miguna in the past, both in print and in private – at least, it was meant to be private, until Miguna broke an undertaking of confidence and made a private communication public’.

Was the ‘letter’ on pages 496-8 of ‘Peeling back the mask’ that ‘private communication’?
