Nairobi County Parking Fees Reduced To Sh200 In New Bill

Motorists who park their small cars in the Central Business District (CBD) will now pay Sh 200 for parking down from Sh 300 after the County Finance Bill passed by Nairobi County Assembly on Tuesday.

According to The County’s Budget Chairman Robert Mbatia the move is aimed at relieving the residents who are already burdened by the fuel levy, adding that the reduced amount will also enhance compliance and increase revenue collection since it’s affordable to all.

“We believe this will reduce corruption in the sector because people preferred bribing between Sh100 or Sh150 instead of paying the required fee but now when you consider you are only paying Sh200 and if you don’t pay you risk being clamped, you just opt to pay the fee,” said Mbatia.

Pick-ups will pay Sh200 per day for picking and offloading while will Canter will be charged Sh300.

Lorries and Trailers will pay Sh500 per day and Sh1000 respectively per day while Motorbikes and Tuk-tuk operators will pay Sh500 and Sh1000per month.

The reduction of parking fees comes as a relief to motorists considering that the Bill had proposed that parking fees be increased to Sh 400 up from Sh 300 for saloon cars. Large body vehicles such as trailers Sh6, 000 for parking and offloading, Lorries Sh4, 000 and canters Sh2, 000 and Sh1000 for boda-bodas and Sh 1500 for tuk-tuks.

Taxi-hailing App companies will now be required to pay between Sh50, 000 and Sh300, 000 per year as operational license fee depending on the size of their fleets. Uber, Taxify, Little Cab and other companies with a fleet of over 100 vehicles will be required to pay Sh300, 000 per year.

These will be paid by the companies and not individual drivers.

“We will not charge the drivers but the company itself. For example, Uber has an office in Westlands, thus it will be required to pay the fee,” Mbatia said.

The County Finance Bill is awaiting assent by Governor Mike Sonko within 14 days.
