Breaking News - former Education CS George Magoha dies

The Ministry of Education has announced that schools will reopen on August 15 following the early mid-term break occasioned by the General Elections.

Education Cabinet secretary Magoha, while making the latest announcement, said the process of tallying of ballots is still ongoing, hence the extension of opening dates.

“On 1^st August 2022, I ordered the early closure of all basic institutions to allow for adequate preparations and conduct of the general elections. We indicated that reopening would be on the 11^th of August 2022. We have however been informed that the process of tallying votes may still be ongoing on the aforementioned date. Therefore following further consultations I hereby declare the government’s decision that basic education institutions will reopen from Monday 15, August 2022,” Magoha said in a gazette notice.

Last week while announcing a countrywide closure of all institutions of basic learning in preparation for the elections, CS George Magoha had announced the schools reopening as 11^th August, although he mentioned it was tentative based on the outcome of the elections.

According to IEBC, over 250 learning institutions that include primary, secondary schools, universities and technical training institutions have been used as tallying centers in the August 9 polls, which took place yesterday across the country.

Parents continue to keep their fingers crossed hoping that the school calendar will not incur any further disruptions as the Ministry races against time to normalize the academic calendar by January 2023 when the first class of junior high schoolers based on the new Competency-based curriculum (CBC) is expected to kickstart.

The school calendar was disrupted in 2020 following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw schools in Kenya closed for almost a year.

The current academic year consists of four national exams; Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE),  Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), as well as Grade Three and Six exams under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
