Sakaja Starts Crackdown on Night Clubs

The Nairobi county government has effected the crackdown on nightclubs within residential areas following a directive from Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja.

County officers started the crackdown on the night of November 27 by carrying out a series of raids on nightclubs operating in residential areas.

Sakaja’s directive follows a public outcry over noise pollution.  On Friday the Governor vowed to cancel licenses for nightclubs operating in residential areas. He stated that his administration will no longer issue or renew nightclub licenses operating in residential areas.

According to the directive issued by the county government, no nightclub licenses would be issued or renewed for establishments outside the city center with those issued to nightclubs outside the city center revoked with immediate effect. Existing joints are required to only function as bars and restaurants, with limited hours of operation (until 10 pm).

President William Ruto has expressed his support on Sakaja’s directive and assured the county of his full support in the crackdown.

Kenyans have reacted to Nairobi governor, Johnson Sakaja’s decision to ban from operating in residential areas, along with three other directives that were issued by the county government on Friday, November 25.

Some, who are tired of all the noise and chaos are happy with the directive while some argue that the move will lead to loss of jobs.
