Kisumu – 30 Million Trees to be Planted in Two Years

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o launched tree-planting a campaign this week to plant 30 million trees in Kisumu County over the next two year, meanwhile banning the cutting down of trees, particularly by charcoal dealers.

Nyong’o announced the project saying it was an initiative outlined in his manifesto at the last election that aspired to 1 million trees being planted in the county every year.

Equity Bank Seedlings

The Kisumu tree-plating campaign is being sponsored by Equity Bank which has donated 30,000 seedlings that have been planted along the Pamba road.

Last month Equity bank donated 25,000 seedlings that were planted at Songor in Muhoroni.

Nyong’o said he aims to increase forest cover in Kisumu County from approximately one per cent at present to 10 per cent.

Possibly controversially the Governor has directed that every family in Kisumu will have to give over 10 per cent of its land to re-forestation.
