The New York Times has listed Tsavo National Park, the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world, among the top travel destinations in 2024 in its annual travel listing.

Tsavo National Park, which is famed for ‘dust-red elephants’, was celebrated as Africa’s most successful elephant rehabilitation program.

Each year, the global newspaper compiles a list of 52 places worth traveling to.

Tsavo National Park was ranked position 31 on the list, which also featured Morocco at position 19, Antananarivo in Madagascar at position 22, and Hurghada in Egypt at number 41. Madagascar was recognized for its textiles exploration and contemporary art and Hurghada in Egypt for its abundant marine ecosystem.

As New York Times contributor Danielle Pergamenta observes in the list of top travel destinations in 2024, the elephant population in Kenya has grown by 21 percent since 2014 owing to numerous conservation efforts.

“….In Kenya, the elephant population has grown by 21 percent since 2014, to a total of 36,280. Almost half live in Tsavo, home to Africa’s most successful elephant rehabilitation program, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

At its heart are several core conservation projects, including an elephant orphanage, rehabilitation units and mobile veterinary clinics that have treated more than 11,000 animals, including some 3,500 elephants, since 1977,” the article reads in part.

Paris, Japan and North America’s regions of Canada and Mexico appeared among the top 3 destinations to visit in 2024. Paris is the host of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Olympics opening ceremony is planned to be hosted outdoors, along the River Seine and near the Eiffel Tower, which is a first and a break from the usual stadium setting.

There will also be an outdoor swimming and the para-triathlon will be set against the backdrop of the Pont d’Iéna.
