Residents in Kisii County and parts of Nyamira have faced a week of taps running dry as services have been disrupted not by a lack of water but rather by in-fighting in the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company.

The company is supposed to supply water to both counties but two weeks ago the company’s board was disbanded over allegations of the mismanagement of millions of shillings of funds. A week later the taps ran dry.

A month prior to that the managing director of the company, Mr Osborn Obaiga, was suspended along with other board members who supported his faction. Obaiga was subsequently replaced by Mr Elvis Masiga who is also the director of the water company in Kisii County.

Apparently the dispute developed between two factions within the company in a battle over the management of the Sh1.5 billion Kgati water project funded by the German Development Bank, the completion of which took place in October 2020.
