Misspelling on Murang’a High School’s 50th Anniversary cake.

One of the hawk-eyed Kenya Forum correspondent noticed a misspelling on Muranga High School’s anniversary cake on the above photo from Tuesday’s Star Newspaper. Could this be a reflection of the poor English performance in Kenyan schools?

It is quite a concern that the English language, which is Kenya’s official language has been on the decline in terms of performance in both Primary and Secondary School level. For the last four years three Ministers in charge of Education, Prof. Sam Ongeri, the late Mutula Kilonzo and Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi have decried over the poor performance in English when they released the National exams results.

What could be the problem? Is it the new syllabus, teachers, sheng, mother tongues or mobile phones (that encourage short messages)?
