Government Withdraws Cuban Doctors From North Eastern Kenya

The government has withdrawn Cuban doctors deployed in Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties, following last week’s abduction of their colleagues by Al Shabaab.

Dr. Herrera Correa and Dr. Landy Rodriguez were kidnapped while on duty in Mandera county.

A police officer, who had been providing security to them was shot dead during the abduction.

Police spokesman Charles Owino said concerted efforts are being made in the search and rescue for the Cuban doctors by a multinational agency team. He also appealed to anyone with information that might help in the search for the abducted Cuban doctors to contact the police.

“Concerted efforts are being made for their search and rescue by a multi-agency security team,” He said, adding that Kenya is safe.

“Further, we would like to assure all members of the public and the international community that our country is safe as our security agencies remain vigilant and will spare no effort safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of all Kenya” he assured,” Owino stated.
